Jean-Luc Rivière, The Peony Farmer

Jean-Luc Rivière is the sixth generation to run his renowned peony farm. Established in the town of Crest, the farm is not just an example of expert agriculture, it’s a great family story.

In the Rivière family, the art of growing peonies has been handed down from father to son for decades. A lover of the great outdoors, Jean-Luc is no exception to the rule. "I love working with nature, outdoors. [...] And I like to be alone in the fields. It does me good sometimes," he says. Happy to be able to develop the family business, he admits to often juggling "between the weather and the clock."

Plant breeding, propagation, growing and marketing of the peonies are the watchwords of his day. Far from having a standard schedule, Jean-Luc adapts to the needs of the moment, with "the season being very structured." At all times, there’s no question of closing. To thrive, the 700 varieties of this “queen of flowers"
belonging to his collections must be pampered every day.

This huge choice almost makes the farmer’s head spin. “I don’t have a favorite," he says. Attributing great elegance to a Japanese variety, he nevertheless evokes with admiration the Madame André Devillers, “a double flower of a pure red, without a single note of blue, which is very rare. This is what we refer to when we say ‘red as a peony’.”
